Obituary

Mrs. Martha Jean Pruitt On August 15, 2026, surrounded by the love and presence of her family, Mrs. Martha Jean Pruitt peacefully gained her wings and entered her eternal rest. Born on March 12, 1942, Martha lived a life marked by faith, service, excellence, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.

Martha was the beloved daughter of the late Mattie Walton Herring, whose nurturing spirit shaped her life, and the late Shelly Smith. Raised in Union Springs, Alabama, Martha accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and united with Mt. Silla Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful servant throughout her life. She sang joyfully with the Mt. Silla Senior Choir, served diligently as Church Coordinator, and walked out her faith with grace, humility, and steadfast commitment. A proud graduate of Carver High School, Class of 1960, Martha embodied the true spirit of a Warhawks. She served as Head Drum Majorette, led with poise and precision, and was celebrated as one of the school choir’s standout vocalists. Her love for music, children, and community became the heartbeat of her life work. Martha passion for education blossomed early. She opened her own home kindergarten, providing a safe, loving, and enriching learning environment for children in her community. In 1973, she expanded her calling and joined the Bullock County School System, serving as a dedicated teacher at South Highland Middle School. For over 30 years, she poured into generations of students, teaching, mentoring, encouraging, and shaping young lives with patience, creativity, and compassion. Her legacy as an educator remains deeply rooted in Union Springs. Martha was a devoted Mother, Godmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend. A woman whose love was wide, welcoming, and unwavering. She was first married to the late Arthur Ousley, and later to Calvin Pruitt, both of whom she cherished. She leaves behind a powerful legacy through her children:

The late Eric Ousley, Shelia Pruitt Young, Zachuary (LaKesha) Pruitt, Carolyn Pruitt Oliver, and God‑daughter Tiffany Glasco. Her love continues through her grandchildren:

Kokila, Shari, Cortez, Unique, Courtney, Jasmine, Samuel, Devontay, Jokazzia, Thoquaisha, Zackese, Taniyah, Trent, and Eleven (11) Great‑Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her siblings:

Martha also shared an unbreakable bond with her Special Sister/Best Friend: Roslynn Jordan, Sister‑in‑Law: Dorothy Monroe, along with a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, extended Family, and cherished Friends.

To know Martha was to experience kindness, wisdom, laughter, and a gentle strength that lifted others. She lived with purpose, served with passion, and loved with her whole heart. Her legacy is woven into the lives she touched, her family, her students, her church, and her community.

Her wings were earned.

Her journey was full.
